Celebrating Female run businesses that matter this International Women’s Day

Helen Rose
6 March 2024

Hello loves.

International Women’s Day falls on Friday 8th March.

It isn’t new – the first IWD was held in March 1911. IWD isn’t country, group or organisation specific. It is a day of collective global activism and celebration that belongs to all those committed to forging women’s equality.*

As a female run business, we are obviously very passionate about equity in business and are very conscious that this conversation is far from resolved. Women are fighting every day for rights, equality and inclusion.

On this International Women’s Day, we wanted to focus on our doorstep here in Exeter and celebrate some of the women closest to us geographically that have made an impact on us personally and professionally. We are surrounded by incredible women making a difference to the emotional, mental and physical well-being of women – locally, nationally and globally.

We are completely spoilt for choice when it comes to female led businesses we know and love, this is just a snippet of brilliance!

So please join us to celebrate these incredible women, and share with us who you’d like to celebrate too.

Victoria Caulfield

Victoria is a Postpartum Physiotherapist based here in Exeter. She is committed to women’s health throughout pregnancy and beyond. Her work is inspiring and empowering.

You can find her on Insta here.

Bee Watson

Based literally round the corner from the shop, Bee is a PT who is passionate about women’s health at all ages, and ditching toxic diet culture. Her energy is contagious!

You can find Bee, and get in touch with her here.

Emma Hewlett

Our most favourite of florists and friend of LAD, Emma is a ray of sunshine and works absolute magic with flowers for women on their wedding day.

You can follow and get in touch with Emma here.

Kalkidan Legesse

Kalkidan is a force. After co-founding and running Sancho’s on Fore Street she has now launched Owni – a new way of embracing circular fashion and digitising your wardrobe and changing the way we shop.

Find our more and follow Owni App here.

Anna Dervout

Fellow yarn lover and community advocate, Along Avec Anna is based just around the corner from us on Fore Street and run by the lovely Anna. She has always been a gorgeous supporter of us and we adore her stunning designs. Well worth a visit!

You can find her here.

More of our favourite Exeter Female led businesses...

As I said above, there are so, so many female led businesses in Exeter that we are so in awe of. These are just a handful. We’d love to hear yours!

Support for women

Our feminism is intersectional so we also wanted to highlight a few of the organisations on our doorstep working hard for women.

Displaced women, refugee women, queer & trans women; ALL women need to be honoured and celebrated this IWD.

As the wonderful Maya Angelou says; “The truth is, no one of us can be free until everybody is free.”
