I-cord is a fun and effective technique of creating a tube of knitting – it can also be applied to existing knitting, as we’ll discuss here.
Applied I-cord is a really lovely and neat trim to add to your knits, you can work it in your main colour to give a subtle and clean finish or use a contrasting colour as shown in our video to create a wonderful colour pop statement.
This technique has so many uses, not only is it decorative but it also helps your edges from rolling which is super handy. You can make it narrower or wider depending on how many stitches you cast on with to begin with.
Pick up a stitch on your knitted piece, somewhere along the edge you want to apply your i-cord
Rather than turning your work, you now need to slide your stitches to the other end of your needle
knit until your final 2 stitches then knit the last 2 stitches together - through the back loop
Repeat this process - pick up a stitch on your work, slide your stitches to the other end of your needle, knit to last 2, k2tog-tbl
Now that you know how to work applied i-cord you can work this beautiful trim onto all sorts of projects – finish blanket edges with it, neckline trims, cardigan fronts – the works! Go wild!
