I-Cord

A way of creating a lil knitted tube

I-cord knitting is fast and easy once you know what you’re doing. It’s a way of creating a tube of knitting which is perfect for ties on cardigans and jumpers, belts or even straps on tops.

It’s easiest to do using 2 double pointed needles but can also be done on circular knitting needles (as shown in our video) the important thing to remember is not to turn your work like usual but instead slide your stitches to the other end – this way you’re always working on the same side of your knitting and cinching it together at the back to make a seamless tube.

Step 1

Cast on the amount of stitches you require (your pattern will tell you how many)

Step 2

Knit across all your stitches

Step 3

Rather than turning your work like normal, keep it facing you and slide your stitches to the other end of your needle

Step 4

Knit the row of stitches again, pulling your yarn quite tight on the first stitch to cinch them together

You'll always be starting with the same stitch on every row as you're sliding the stitches back rather than turning them

Keep going

Repeat steps 3 & 4 - Sliding your stitches back and then knitting a row - until your work measures the correct length

To Finish

Once you've knit to the desired length simply cut your yarn and use a tapestry needle to thread it through the live stitches to cinch them together then weave the end down the inside of your tube

Ta Da! It’s as simple as that but so effective! We love using i-cord to add texture and finesse to knits. It’s such a tactile technique and a real bonus to hit loose ends!
